Lissajous is a Real-time Audio Reactive Graphics device bult in Max/MSP (Standalone | MaxForLive) and distributed by Audiobulb Records the 1st June 2015.

This media project was inspired by the work of Jules Antoine Lissajous with the purpose of investigating the relationship between sound and vision, chaos and order, closely related to astronomy, mathematics & physics. It explores the field of harmony and disorder and let the user dip into an elegant, dreamlike, minimalistic yet chaotic space which reflects the complex rules of the universe in all its abstract beauty. The software shows sound oscillations as XY matrix functions and creates complex graphics curves. Lissajous graphycally describes sound and allows observation of constantly varying signal voltage of two audio signals as function of time. Video generated by sound can be controlled in endless ways by giving to the user the possibility of a whole new range of interactions.

The project aims to conceive sound out of data, it analyses the binary content of any kind of data and converts it into and audible file. We live in a reality made of chaos we try to rule and transform into order, imposing our laws and archiving them creating articulations. The same happens in informatics: we impose laws and rules to be respected from the user and the machine. My purpose with this project is to brake those rules and mess with the various encoding methods as a curious punker. Soundify Raw Data is an early experiment by Francesco Gagliardi involving Different Data Storage devices and Encoding Methods to analyse and display raw data informations as audible sources. A dark, laboratory-like room hosts a conglomeration of common and unusual data storage devices such as Floppy, CD/DVD, USB sticks, DAT and DLT. Visitors can test how previously prepared devices sound like or even soundify their own!! Once a device is introduced in the machine a shell script is automatically launched generating a corresponding audio result out of the data informations stored within it.
Such audio contents have not been modified with any program.

Shell Script

The script used on this project is based on two command line utilities capable to convert any raw information into an audible file: od and sox.
od is used to read the data informations from a document, an external hd or CD, DVD, Floppy, USB Stick and save those informations inside a text file. The last step is to read inside this file with SoX and codify those data informations as an audio file content.
